Coach Ronni shares the real meaning behind the CrossFit whiteboard, community, competition, and keeping perspective on your fitness journey.
Why I Love the Whiteboard at CrossFit Steamboat
I walk into the gym every day and head straight for the whiteboard.
I LOVE THE WHITEBOARD!
It’s the heartbeat of our gym, a daily snapshot of effort, sweat, and shared experience. I love knowing who’s been in, seeing everyone’s names, and getting that little glimpse into their day. We can all commiserate over that brutal EMOM of wall balls and deadlifts, right?
I love seeing people’s successes, and on some days, their struggles. I love the athletes who write out every detail: how they broke up their reps, what they ate, how they felt. And I love the ones who just write a simple “worked hard.”
Every mark on that board tells a story.
What the Whiteboard Really Means
For me, the whiteboard means three things at CrossFit Steamboat: community, celebration, and competition.
1. Community
Those names on the board? They represent something powerful, connection. When we see each other’s scores, we’re reminded that we’re all in this together. We’re cheering each other on, helping each other fight through weaknesses, and celebrating strengths.
Whether you finished first or last, PR’d or went lighter that day, when you write your name on the board, you’re declaring “I showed up.” That’s something to be proud of.
2. Celebration
At CrossFit Steamboat the whiteboard is also where we celebrate the wins, big and small.
- The first time you RX a workout — that’s a big day.
- The day you PR your clean and jerk — that’s a big day.
- The first time you string together kipping pull-ups — that’s a big day!
We work hard for these moments, and the board gives us a place to honor them. As CrossFitters and athletes, we deserve to be celebrated for our effort and persistence.
3. Competition and a little Perspective at CrossFit Steamboat
Ah, competition, the spicy side of the whiteboard. For me, it’s motivating. I love checking in to see how I stack up against certain people. Sometimes I need to beat their score; other days, I just want to keep up. And occasionally, I tell myself: just don’t quit. That friendly push brings out the best in me, but I’ll be honest, it can also bring out the worst.
There are days when I’m tired, sore, or my chest-to-bar pull-ups mysteriously vanish. Those days, the board can feel discouraging. If you are reading this and are new to CrossFit, try a FREE class at CrossFit Steamboat and see the whiteboard for yourself!
